Repiping FAQs

What are the signs I need a whole-home repipe?

The clearest signs are failures that keep repeating instead of a single isolated leak: recurring slab leaks in different spots, a second or third pinhole in copper lines, rusty or discolored water, low pressure throughout the house, and the presence of polybutylene (gray PB) or pre-1975 cast iron. When the pipe material itself is failing everywhere at once, replacing it beats chasing one leak at a time.

Should I repipe or just repair the leak?

Repair the leak if it is the first failure in an otherwise healthy pipe system. Repipe when it is the latest in a pattern -- repeat slab leaks, multiple pinholes, polybutylene, or corroded galvanized and cast iron. The honest test is whether you are fixing one bad spot or a system that is wearing out. Shaw will inspect first and tell you which one you actually have.

What determines the cost of a whole-home repipe?

Cost depends on the size of your home, the number of bathrooms and fixtures, the pipe material you choose, and how accessible the existing lines are. We do not quote a price sight unseen -- we inspect the home and give you a detailed written estimate before any work begins. Financing is available through Wisetack for homeowners who want to spread the cost. Call (321) 626-6153 for an assessment.

PEX, copper, or CPVC -- which is best for Florida?

All three are approved under Florida building code. PEX is flexible, resists scale from hard water, has fewer leak-prone fittings, and is the most common repipe choice on the Space Coast. Copper lasts a long time and is naturally antimicrobial but costs more. CPVC is a solid rigid-pipe option. The best fit depends on your home and budget, and Shaw walks you through the trade-offs rather than pushing the priciest choice.

Do I need a permit, and do I have to leave home during a repipe?

Yes to the permit -- Brevard County requires a plumbing permit for a whole-home repipe and the work must pass county inspection. Shaw pulls the permit and schedules the inspections for you. You do not have to move out. Water is shut off only during working hours and restored at the end of each work day, and our crews work in sections while protecting floors and furniture.

Do old cast iron drain and sewer lines need replacing too?

Often, yes. A repipe replaces the supply lines that bring water in, but pre-1975 homes frequently also have corroded cast iron on the drain and sewer side, which fails as slow drains, backups, or sewer odor. Shaw evaluates both when we inspect, so you are not surprised later. If the drain side is failing, we address sewer and cast iron line work as part of the plan.
